Barbara Wolfram "Ulma" Doily

Put your mouse over the photo for a close-up.

I have been informed that Barbara passed into the Summerland. She will be missed by us all.

Feb. 21, 2007- I found there are errors in the pattern. I will try to work them out at some point.

Cast on 6 stitches - all not mentioned rounds are knitted.
I usually cast on 3 stitches on 2 needles, then join and knit 2 stitches, take another needle and knit 2 stitches, then take another needle and knit the last 2 stitches. Then knit one more round before starting.

Rows Row Instructions Stitches on each needle
Row 1: O, k1 - the pattern gets done twice on each needle 4 stitches on each needle
Row 3: O, k1, O, k1, O - the pattern gets done twice on each needle 10 stitches on each needle
Row 5: (4x k1, O) k1 18 stitches on each needle
Row 7: SKP, (4x k1, O) k1, k2tog 22 stitches on each needle
Row 9: SKP, k2, (3x O, k1) O, k2, k2tog 26 stitches on each needle
Row 11: SKP, k3, (3x O, k1) O, k3, k2tog 30 stitches on each needle
Row 13: SKP, k4, (3x O, k1) O, k4, k2tog 34 stitches on each needle
Row 15: SKP, k13, k2tog, O 32 stitches on each needle
Row 17: SKP, k11, k2tog, O, k1, O 32 stitches on each needle
Row 19: SKP, k9, k2tog, O, k3, O 30 stitches on each needle
Row 21: SKP, k7, k2tog, O, k1, O, Sk2togP, O, k1, O 32 stitches on each needle
Row 23: SKP, k5, k2tog, O, k3, O, k1b, O, k3, O 36 stitches on each needle
Row 25: SKP, k3, k2tog, O, k1, O, (3x Sk2togP, O) k1, O 38 stitches on each needle
Row 27: SKP, k1, k2tog, O, k3, O, k1b, O, k3, O, k1b, O, k3, O 40 stitches on each needle
Row 28: k 40

With a size 7 steel crochet hook: single crochet through 3 stitches, chain 9, then single crochet through next 4 stitches, chain 9, (3x single crochet through next 3 stitches, chain 9) single crochet through next 4 stitches.

Repeat this process 5 more times until all stitches are off your needles.

Slip stitch the last chain 9 into the first 3 stitches. Then for easier stretching I usually slip stitch up to the center of the first loop, single crochet in the middle of this loop, chain 9, single crochet into next loop and continue like that until the end, then fasten off. This gives you a centered loop right over the tip of each leaf. Makes it a lot easier to stretch even.

Using size 30 cotton and #2 needles this will stretch to a 10" round, very lacy doily.
