Jackie Erikson-Schweitzer February 1999 Made for Nanacy McGarvey. 35/2 half-bleached linen, size 00 needles. Blocked size: 2x8 3/4 inches. Linen makes such a nice crisp lace. This thread is from C.L. Blomqvist in Sweden Click this link The pattern is simply the beginning and end sections of the chart from the Heartstrings Hanging Vines Stole Pattern (i.e. the first and last stitches outside the whole repeat.) I thought it was interesting how taking just a portion of the pattern produced yet another. By using the edge portions of the chart, I didn't have to do anything additional for an attractive edge on the bookmark. For blocking, I decided to press the wetted bookmark with a hot iron. Pressing is how I remember my Grandma and Mommy dressing the laces used for tablecloths, pillow edgings, etc. I seem to recall that this is recommended to bring up that nice sheen on the linen. But you certainly have to watch that you don't scorch your fingers while positioning those scallops! |

Debra Matz March 1999 I had spun merino into a 2-ply yarn.I used #2 needles. The center pattern is Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer's own from her Cascading Hearts Shawl pattern. (The bookmark was for Jackie.) The edging is from the Hewitt and Daley book, Classic Cotton Knitted Edgings, Pattern #22. This edging is knitted longways. The heart danglie is a pattern available online from Knitted Threads by Janet Rehfeldt. (She is on my links page.) I added a simple crochet edge to the heart. I over-did the bottom when impaling on the board. Dang... |

Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer March 1999 Made for Janet Lynn. 2-ply handspun from hand-painted cotton and silk roving, Starview Farm, Edgefield SC. #0 needles. Blocked size: 3x9 1/2 inches. The pattern is featured by Laurie Longinotti on her web page: Click this link It is #59 from the Florence Knitting Silk book, printed by the Nonotuck Silk Co., Florence Mass., 1886. The color and varigation of the thread distracts somewhat from the knitted lace pattern. In a light-colored single color, the texture of the leaf shapes would show up more. But overall, I think the mixture of colors lends a nice natural look to the leafy theme. This is more of a slub yarn than I would normally spin. It was one of those rovings that I just could not geet to draft smoothly, no matter which end I drafted from, or method I used. I've set it aside to try another time when maybe I will enjoy it more, I love the color and effect, though. Maybe it is just meant to be what it is. (grin) |

Jennifer Penney March 1999 It's knitted in size 40 cotton on 1.5mm needles. I used Knitted Lace #7 from Lace from the Attic as a starting point, but changed it from a garter stitch pattern to a stocking stitch one. I also changed it from an edging into a more bookmark-type shape too. |

Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer April 1999 I used a very fine singles hemp from the Hempery and size 2/0 needles. The blocked size is 2 1/4 x 8 inches. Hemp is similar to linen in its inelasticity and firmness. As such, it lends a nice bit of natural stiffness to the bookmark without additives like starch. The center panel is Lace Cable in The Art of of Shetland Lace by Sarah Don. For the left-slanting decrease in this pattern, I used a K2tog-B, (knit 2 together through the back-loops), instead of the slip-knit-pass-slipped-stitch-over. I made the border around the center motif, although I'm sure this simple pattern is not new and likely is in pattern books. I was just playing around for something to set of the center panel. It is a simple 4-stitch repeat of: knit 2 tog, yarn over, k2 tog-b. This is done every row. For a chain selvage on the edges of the bookmark, an extra stitch on each edge is slipped at the beginning and knit at the end of every row. |

Ruth Matthews April 1999 It is made with Knit-Cro-Sheen on size 2 bamboo needles. I used the Frost Flowers (also called Spanish Lace and other names), pattern from The Harmony Guide 440 More Knitting Stitches and edging pattern #149 from classic Knitted Cotton Edgings that Margaret Lambe sent me. Most Frost Flowers patterns are over 34 stitches plus 2 which allows the lace and stockinette stitches to balance out. Harmony's repeat is 18 stitches (I added 1 stitch on each edge and slip-stitched over that to create a straight edge) so the pattern is sort-of an hourglass shape as it doesn't have side by side repeats to balance the shape. I blocked it straight but it wants to revert to the natural shape, so the sides are a bit wavy. |
